[OFF TOPIC] Recommended Android Applications

Post by EmmanuelOga »

Hey guys,

I recently got a Droid 2 phone and I'm looking for some killer apps. Google is a mess with its crapload of TOP-NNN-APPS-FOR-ANDROID generic pages, so I thought the might be a couple of you experienced in this regard.

So far I'm liking What's Up for messaging and the usual suspects... official apps from social networks like twitter. I'm also giving a try to eBuddy, looks pretty nice to integrate several messenger services into a single app. Some of the things I'm looking for: an IRC client, todo managers, music-making programs, games, etc..

IRC client: andchat or irssiconnectbot (essentially an ssh client with features specific to irssi commands)
todo managers: astrid
music-making programs: uhhh, sound recorder? I use xpiano to quick record midi things on a virtual piano.
games: peggle, gamedev story

movie player: rockplayer
audio: songbird
browser: opera mobile
misc: samba filesharing, reader, listen, alarm clock xtreme, stopwatch, andftp, weatherbug

the amazon app store offers a free paid app every day too.

Zenonia 3 is a free game if you like KRPGs.
xpiano is very cool for music stuff.
I use PDANet for internet connection stuff.
Gmote is also very cool, if your computer can connect.
Kurosuke needs beta testers

Yeah, I'm quite sure there is nothing even coming close to this:

http://itunes.apple.com/app/sunvox/id324462544?mt=8

for android :(

My picks:

The official twitter client was very slow, I replaced it with twicca and it seems prettier and faster. Nice to see a single guy making an app better than a big company like twitter.

Official Google Reader for reading stuff. It's still slow, I'd like to find faster alternatives. Google googles is nice to play with.

If you are into running, runkeeper is great, but it doesn't work on my machine (Samsung Galaxy). I use endomonto.

I find that the default browser does just fine for me, but I keep others (firefox, opera) installed just in case. The default music player is also ok for me.

I also think that android needs a music making program. There is none AFAIK. There's even a SunVox version for PalmOS, that's ridiculous.

I didn't know about Astrid, I'll check it out.
When I write def I mean function.

I have a Captivate (Galaxy S) and I've been running Cyanogen Mod on it. It is simply awesome.

On my good old HTC Desire, I use ³ for playing music, AndroIRC for IRC, Google Reader for, well, Google Reader and MSN Talk for IM. I have been using Dolphin Browser HD a lot, which I really like, but right now I've moved back to HTC's stock browser for speed. As far as games go, I bought GBCoid, which is totally awesome, and I wrote this little game which I find extremely addicting.

I recently saw Epistle recommended as a good note-taking app, and I like it so far. It has markdown support (note, enable this in the preferences first) and dropbox sync as 'killer' features.

For notes, I use AK Notepad, which syncs to catch.com which works fine. Nothing special about the app, but it does its job well.

Of course, the Dropbox app is a must have. Strangely, it's one of those wierd apps that are better on Android than on iPhone.
