Why not worry about licensing after the game core is completed? Honestly, I highly doubt the actual copywrite holders will stumble upon this, and even in the unlikley situation that they do, will actually give a damn enough to threaten you.

Why worry about licensing at all? I'm not a lawyer (no, really), but my gut says: asking them first is nice.
