Questions before trying Love

Post by Skygrinder »

Now, I've been going through projects and demos for a while, and got tired of it, since I couldn't find what I was looking for, so I just decided to ask directly.

As most of the projects are rpgs, simple platformers, or not games at all, but rather...programs, I think, or demos of programs made in Love. I've been wondering if it is possible to make more complicated platformers, like Castlevania or Megaman games, to be precise, newer Castlevania and Megaman games like Castlevania: Dawn Of Sorrow or Megaman ZX Advent?

If the answer is positive, would you also be kind enough to point me to the best place from where I can start?

I've been messing a little with AS in Flash, but that was pretty long time ago, so I'd like to start from the beginning with Love. Some tutorials would be nice, but ones that would point me more towards platformer development, rather than anything else. Of course, also tutorials for the basic stuff that is needed for any kind of game development.

If you work hard enough, you can create pretty complex games with love2d.
Here are some examples:

http://stabyourself.net/mari0/
(A recreation of mario but with a portal gun. Also more)

http://stabyourself.net/orthorobot/
(cool game similar to FEZ)

(not released yet, but cool. Check out his later videos too.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFs2vzJe ... ature=plcp
(my game, nothing fancy but check it out. To be released soon)

If your first starting out, it will take you a long time to create anything as advanced as most of these. I have been teaching myself this for half a year, and my game isn't nearly as cool as the rest. This is a great place to start, there is a great community, and it's easier to pick up than other languages.

Hope this answered your question. :)

Those are all quite interesting. Anyway, yeah, all I wanted to know is what Love is capable of, but I just couldn't find anything in that demo section, there's too much stuff, it would've taken me ages to find something to show me what I need.

And yeah, this should suffice, it's probably capable of more than I need.

Just, the other thing, where is a good place to start learning to use Love, and Lua, I guess?

EDIT:
Oh, i found this - https://love2d.org/wiki/Category:Tutorials

So, I'll go through that first...though feel free to recommend any other places, if you know any that could help me. Thanks~ ;x

Check this out -> viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3733&start=20

Love2d 0.8 has available shader effects. Something I think a lot of other 2D game engines lack support for.

I also think love has an overall cleaner API, and makes much more sense. I remember using PyGame and getting frustrated a lot.

Love has good performance and a flexible API. Its structured and much more managed code than most engines I've come across. I personally feel Moai is the only real contender against Love2D for 2D game engines. There are some pretty decent size projects that use Love. Like plazma being, In The Dark, WolfenLove, and I've made prototypes for some games in Love and plan to use it for future games.

It can definitely handle larger projects. I picked love up in a matter of days. I guess the only way to find out is to use it, just like any game engine.

In The Dark preview(very cool): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG6UPpKn ... ure=relmfu

Nice bloom :)

And that game looks awesome, the engine is definitely more powerful than I imagined.

Thank you, both, I will definitely give it a shot, in fact, I've already been reading the documentation since the first reply. Though most of the tutorials on the wiki are too advanced for me, some were useful at the moment, but others I couldn't understand at all, I mean, they start off good, but then suddenly dive into more advanced things, and I get completely confused. Though, I found these videos on Sockmunkee Dev channel on youtube, so I'll check those out now, and see if they provide a better advancement, from easier stuff towards harder.
