Seriously? I mean, I've never seen one like that. I've seen trackballs on computer (I owned one) and in arcades (Marble Madness). But not part of a joystick. Wouldn't it just basically be a mouse/joystick hybrid? The ball would just control the cursor, wouldn't it? Which would just categorize it as a mouse.

Also, I still don't know what a "hat" is.

It's a common synonym for "d-pad". Probably was born because not all joystick d-pads are actually directional pads and instead are more like digital (as opposed to analog) thumb sticks or whatever.

Here is a joystick hat:

Some gamepad drivers recognize the d-pad of the gamepad as a hat switch as well, as Raidho said. Some don't.

Well, within Windows, all joysticks I've ever used (and I had gamepads, HOTAS joysicks and steering wheels and whatnot) had their d-pad like devices recognized as hats. I've never thought it could possibly be otherwise until I heard of XBox360 controller OS X driver that would recognize d-pad as 4 buttons.

They're aren't always red...

Isn't it one of those track ball joysticks like the old bowling arcade games or pacman?? I think I played a pacman game with a rollerball.

I think it's the rod of Link's head.
