Does anyone here use tracker music? I love it myself. The Mod Archive have some good songs, but I am having a hard time reaching the artists to ask permission to use their songs.

I do. (both make and listen to)

On the topic of module usage permissions, i have the following view:

If the module in question is
  • older than ((1/80)*(currentYear-(1987)))^-0.8 years (for 2015: ~2 years 4 months) (totally arbitrary function regarding the projected copyright usefullness time in the future)
    or
  • the original author vanished completely from the internet (minus any archive that might hold their compositions, or some old, non-functional personal website, where the download links don't work anymore)
    or
  • a remake of some musical piece that originated outside the demoscene (like pop music or tv show tune adaptations and the like, keyword is remake)
then i would hazard using the track in question in my games, with further 3 criteria:
  • i credit the author(s)/group(s) found in the module file
    and
  • if they do contact me, and don't want me to use the track, i would replace it with something else, to comply with their requests.
    and
  • i -personally- wouldn't do this for a commercial game; though this one is mostly just me, since i usually make FOSS stuff anyways.
But frankly, i'm on the logical conclusive opinion that they'd either be happy that someone uses their stuff, or that they wouldn't even know about it, based on how fast time and content (files) flies 'n dies on the internet nowadays. :3

Edit: Sorry about contributing to the thread hijack, Eric... :monocle:

@zorg, that is pretty much in-line with my thoughts. I'd like to hear some of your tracks too! I also enjoy module tracking, but cannot say I make amazingly great songs, but they have their place.
