Sure. Insted of cycling through an array of quads, shift through an array of images. Adapting from a spritesheet model should be quite simple.

Resize all your images to squared numbers and leave the rest alpha. Or use Quads(better): http://love2d.org/wiki/love.graphics.newQuad
That should fix it.
