spreading more löve

Post by farvardin »

I thought it would be cool to propose some löve for the successful Eee PC. The ubuntu package is far too bleeding edge for the lame linux xandros system shipped with it, so I've compiled löve on a debian etch system, which is öld and cömpatible with the Eee PC. I haven't made a package yet, but I will do it in the future. The binaries are there :

I've also made a package for easily installing löve on the archlinux distribution:

Nice. ^^

Note that there's no need to distribute liblove.a. It is meant for module-creation. (Distant future).

Is there some way of building an Arch package in Ubuntu?

ok, I won't include this liblove.a until it's necessary.

for building an archlinux package from ubuntu or another distribution, it's possible to use VirtualBox, or to use a chroot.

Note I haven't really made a package, for unsupported software the AUR repository is only keeping "receipes" to build easily software on any archlinux system. It means with only one command, the use will download the necessary dependencies, the sources, and it will build them and create the package which will install itself at the right place.

I've made a linux PPC build of löve, it's working well on this architecture too:

I've just opened a sourceforge project for my wip game, I'll put those builds on it in the future.

I've made an article on a popular French Linux and Open-Source oriented website:

Already more than 700 hits to your Lövely project...

Well, the "official" ubuntu deb of Löve works with Ubuntu on the Eee. (I run Ubuntu-eee, but i'm pretty sure it's really the same).

Unfortunately, perfs are terrible. I don't know the reason, but i suppose it has to do with the fact that Löve relies on OpenGL and hardware acceleration for everything. Almost all "real time" demos posted here have a FPS so low it becomes unplayable.
This is too bad since the Eee has a quite correct processor, and plays "pure" SDL games really fine.
Maybe we'd need a "SDL render" option in Löve, even if it would propose less features (like this really neat seamless rotation and zoom of sprites). But I don't know if it would need a lot of work or not. I think i reaad somewhere that Löve didn't even use SDL_Surface at all, so I guess it would need a lot of rewriting.

Too bad. For now I'm back to plain old SDL calls, and wrapping stuff in Lua...

Sort of on this topic, what is the possibility of getting Löve on an iPhone or iPod Touch? It's pretty powerful, and I'm sure could run it. Are there any technical reasons it couldn't be done?
