Alright, challenge 2: A big red plant with lots of leaves.

These challenges are actually important tests. I want to see if other people think the game mechanics are fun (that is, if I've made an actual game or just a toy).

Currently, it is just a toy (more so than e.g. The Sims or other games categorised as toys), but if you add additional game mechanics (that is, any game mechanics) it'll work as a game, IMHO.

Thanks, Robin, that's just what I wanted to know. One of the gametypes (in my mind, it's the main one) will work just like this: It'll ask you to breed a given plant. So if this is fun, it means we're going in the right direction

You know what? I think I'll release a significant new beta when someone completes challenge 2 (a big red plant with lots of leaves)... But I'll let you all wonder about the important new feature until then.
