Unnamed old-school RPG

Post by Username »

I need a name for it.
Not the typical "Legend of XXXX" or similars.

It mixes elements from the Ultima series with elements in The Bard's Tale.

Actual features:
- Huge premade world with a lot of places to explore, dungeons, cities, castles and dragon hives for you to search for certain death ;P No more maps generated randomly by an cold and stupid machine . All maps are done with human löve and affection.
- Plenty of quests and sidequests like in ye ol' good times: quests are not mandatory tasks you must do to advance in the game. They are just annotations in your journal that may help you to find something or solve some problem.
- Turn based
- Amazing 15-color graphics (the game art in the screenshots may not be how the game will look like when finished)
- Player vs Group combats
- Lightweight
- In depth rich game story
- No predefined character classes (mage, warrior, archer...)
- No leveling up
- Skill driven progress (like Ultima Online, where you enhance the skills you use)
- Map events (they trigger when player walk over specific cell)
- Map triggers (they trigger when player "applies" or "uses" the cell, for example, talking to NPCs)
- Player dialogues with different options to choose.
- Easy to customize or mod the game itself without the need to modify the source code: new maps, monsters, tiles, animations, etc...
- Full keyboard driven interface.

What is missing:
- A good combat system.
- 99.9% of the game art.
- Create the game story
- The world map
- All game data such as monsters, weapons, armours, etc...
- Player inventory
- The player skills
- Probably a crafting and gathering system.

Sadly, no download yet...

Combat, inventory and pick-up/drop items implemented:

What monsters drop after the combat:

The strings in the second image are the strings defining the items itself. Of course when game is finished it will show the item names and a small image.
The same for the inventory.

Why don't you upload the game? Is it closed-source?

I am asking because I am doing something very similar and I am interested in seeing how someone else solved the same problems.

It is will be open source once everything is done, tested and working.

Doesn't this kinda defeat the purpose of open source?

There is no singular purpose of open source, as far as I'm aware...

World domination.
What it does do is defeat many of the advantages of open source.

ToDo:

Magic, player journal, crafting/gathering, creating all game art, maps, monsters, story, NPCs, and all game content that is not programming, main menu, optionally a pseudo-online trading system using items codes.

If you're looking for a name for the game then it would be important to know something about the story.
Do you have a storyline already? If not then it'd suggest to think of a storyline first.

just my 2 euro-cents,
