If you want to learn a little more about terrain generation here is a link that might prove useful.

He uses some decent algorithms to make hills and cliffs. Since what you are working on is 2D, you can obviously omit the z-axis. Hope it helps!

Updated it to use quads and enlarged terrain.png from minecraft instead of individual images
makes it so much easier to add new block types and shit. lol

Shouldn't you still see the blocks? Idk i'm not too familiar with po2..lol maybe its due to the resolution being 800x480

Since fade is drawn after the blocks, it covers them, even if it's trasparent
