Unnamed Dot Game Remake

So I made a remake of my own game because I lost the sourcecode... There's no dots in the game anymore so the name doesn't make any sense.

It's a multiplayer game of 2-4 People so you can't play it alone.

The goal of the game is to surround your opponents dots ( blocks ) with your own you get 1 point for every opponents dot you surround the one with the most points at the end of the game wins.

I also made a debug to show exacly how it renders only what needs to be rendered ( F2 to see it in the game )

I now made the menu fade when you switch from start menu to something else or something like that.

Nice work! Gameplay kind of reminds me of Othello, one of my faves. Well done! :awesome:

Thanks for the nice comment. And there's a problem with the gameplay where you can simply build from one side and you cannot get your blocks taken. I fixed it kinda but you can still get immunity like that with no way to stop it I will see what I can do about it...

P.S. I looked up Othello http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reversi that was what you meant wasn't it?

I play a similar game with a friend, the changes are:
  • The first point (square, in this case) has to be near to the center
  • You can only choose a square if it isn't farther than 3 squares from another square
  • When you capture some enemy squares, you put another square (it can be chained)

All of those seems like they would be good rules... I know I played this game with a friend on paper and even tough we never applied the first two rules we followed them.

The thierd one seems to give a great tactical advantage... I will probably add it.

Anyway updated the game so you can't get invincible from building from the sides.

Yep, that's it! I know it by the title of Othello from playing it on the Atari 2600. :)

Also, I really like the color palette -- visually interesting and plus the colors seem to help identify each player. Makes it very easy to read the game map. My only critique at this point would be... it needs sound effects! Something devastating when you nail your opponent. Mwahahaha... :awesome:

Thanks Red, Green, Blue was just (255,0,0), (0,255,0), (0,0,255) then yellow ( I wanted a fourth player because it was appropriate for the score display screen ) was (255,255,0) so it's not really some minor colors like (187,57,202) (whatever that is)
And I think part of what help to read the game map is the white lines the only problem I see with them is that if you zoom out to much they cover the entire board...
I am thinking about changing from direkt colors to images so it's slightly tinted along the borders of the block like ( with a scale from 1 to 9 )

I changed it and it looks better. ( in my opinion )

I'll look for sounds on https://love2d.org/wiki/Free_Game_Resources and see what I can do.

There the love file is attached to the main post. ( Had modified it to crashing since making the EXE so I opened the .exe in 7-zip and unzipped the source from there. (How come not more people know about that? After all you're just using the copy command to get the .exe...) )

Added options for all of those as well.
To do list
  • Update screenshots.
  • Make the board resizeable in the start menu. -- DONE!
  • Take something to eat. -- DONE!
  • Make sure the on/off buttons for the points and distance rules in the start menu looks better. -- DONE!
  • Walk the dog. -- DONE!
  • Find a way to make the chains on/off button look better... ( Suggestions needed )
  • Include a close button for the winner screen at the end. -- DONE!
  • Include how many chain reactions a player have achived. ( Already counting but not displaying ) -- DONE!
  • Lan mode. ( With luasocket? )

I didn't see a reason to do that when you're playing on a limited board that has rules for the limits. -- Because we don't have rules about limits and we like playing it as it's now, without adding them (so, I'm not asking you to do this, it's just the rules we use)

Anyway, would you please be kind enough to add a simple LAN mode to play over the net?
